Mentoring

In recognition of these benefits, the LBNL Physical Sciences Area (comprising the Nuclear Science, Physics, ATAP and Engineering Divisions) has established a Physical Sciences Mentorship Program.  Program development started early in 2020, and the initial mentoring class kicked off in January, 2021, with separate trainings for mentors and mentees, led by Gerry Richmond (Oregon State U, chemistry and DOE undersecretary for science and energy nominee).  Pairs are encouraged to meet monthly for the next year.

The initial class includes postdocs and scientists/engineers as mentees, who were paired with scientist/engineer mentors in different parts of NSD, or in other divisions. We did not pair people with a close working relationship. Junior mentees were usually paired with mentors in a different part of NSD, while more senior mentees were often paired with people in other divisions.  The relationship is confidential on both sides; only the mentorship committee knows who is paired with whom.

The initial program encompassed about 50 mentees and 44 mentors (some mentees had two mentors), with NSD providing 12 mentors and 12 mentees. 22 of the 50 pairings were cross-divisional.

In future years, we plan to expand the program to include graduate students.  At the same time,  LBNL is planning to set up a mentoring program for non-technical personnel, who may have mentors in other divisions.

More information is available in the presentation by Brian Quiter and Spencer Klein at the April 6th Monday NSD meeting.
