Integrated Safety Management (ISM) workflow

Safety is paramount to what we do. We foster a culture in which safety, health, and environmental protection are integrated in all we do, where everyone expects and practices safety, and where we continue to learn and improve. Integrated Safety Management (ISM) is the Department of Energy’s framework for how we protect ourselves and each other while pursuing the Lab’s mission.

Work and life intersect in many ways, and it is important to strive for a balance that is constructive and healthy, both mentally and physically. As integral members of Berkeley Lab and the Physical Sciences Area, we in the Nuclear Science Division strive to deliver on our science mission while embodying the Lab’s stewardship values of Team Science, Service, Trust, Innovation and Respect in all we do.

Inspiring and educating the scientists of tomorrow is a key part of Nuclear Science’s mission. We host undergraduate interns each year and have mentored numerous graduate students. Among their wide variety of impressive futures, many have joined the ranks of our postdoctoral researchers and some have gone on to Berkeley Lab staff positions. We also engage in outreach to the general public, most notable by hosting the annual Nuclear Science Day for Scouts.
