Paul Fallon was appointed Nuclear Science Interim Division Director in July 2026. He is also the Project Director for the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Project, GRETA. An internationally renowned nuclear physicist, his primary research is focused on understanding the structure of atomic nuclei by using and developing advanced gamma-ray detectors. Fallon obtained his PhD from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 1989, and joined LBNL’s Nuclear Science Division in 1992 as a Divisional Fellow. Since joining the laboratory, he has served as Nuclear Structure Group Leader (1997-2006), Deputy Division Director (2006-08), and Program Head (2009-2026).
Ren Cooper was appointed Nuclear Science Division Deputy for Science in October 2022. He is also the Head of the Applied Nuclear Physics Program. His research focuses on the development of new concepts, systems, and algorithms for radiation detection and imaging in basic science, nuclear security, and medicine and he currently leads a portfolio of projects ranging from the development of novel semiconductor detectors to networked sensing and associated data fusion methods. Ren received his Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool, UK, and prior to joining LBNL in 2011 undertook three years of postdoctoral research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory where he developed new detectors and signal processing algorithms for neutrinoless double beta decay studies.
Tom Gallant was appointed Nuclear Science Division Deputy for Operations in May 2024. He has served in the Nuclear Science Division Office since 2007.
