Two collaborations including NSD scientists were successful in securing funding as part of the DOE Office of Nuclear Physics program of “Research Traineeships to Broaden and Diversity the Nuclear Physics Workforce.” Jacklyn Gates, Lee Bernstein, Heather Crawford, Bethany Goldblum, Alan Poon and Jennifer Pore partnered with colleagues in WD&E, CSD, MBIB and faculty at UC Riverside, UC Merced and San Jose State University for a program to engage 10-12 undergraduate trainees Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in California annually in research programs at LBNL, including summers on-site at the lab. The first cohort of students will be recruited this fall and begin their traineeships in January 2021. A second group from NSD, including Ernst Sichtermann and Feng Yuan are part of the “California Bridge to the EIC,” a collaboration led by UC Riverside, with involvement from Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA and LLNL in addition to LBNL. Trainees from this effort will also be performing research at LBNL beginning next summer.
