In June, the LBNL 2025 Physical Sciences Strategic Plan was released. The plan reflects on the major accomplishments since the last plan in 2018, and lays out a decadal vision for the four Divisions of the Physical Sciences Area: Nuclear Science, Physics, Accelerator Technology and Applied Physics, and Engineering.
The Strategic Plan is the result of a collaborative process that explored ongoing research activities across the Physical Sciences Area (PSA), and identified key science goals and initiatives for the future while ensuring alignment with the goals of the Department of Energy.
The NSD section of the plan is structured around the Strategic Pillars of Science and Discovery, Instrumentation and Facilities, and People and Skills, and lays out five and ten-year goals relevant to the full breadth of the NSD scientific portfolio and facilities in NSD. These goals, and the associated activities, are aligned with the 2023 NSAC Long Range Plan. The plan also included cross-cutting sections such as AI/ML, microelectronics, quantum information science, and stewardship, communication, outreach, and education.
The NSD and cross-cutting sections were developed with significant contributions from many individuals in NSD and a strategic planning process that played out over the past 18 months, which included two Division-wide retreats during which the strategic goals were refined.
More information on the Strategic Plan can be found on the PSA website.
